Minutes for June 6, 2007, 5 p.m.
Present:
Roger Cox, Liz Brewster, Donna Roberts, Curtis Smout, Margie Esquibel, Bob De Boer, Lynda Money, Ed Freestone, Lois Poole, Carol Freestone, Ed Allen, Roy Thornock, Pat Larson, Molly Bird, Ralph Bird, Sandi Coxe and Delores Shupe.
Absent:
Joan Petty and Sharon Peffer.
I. Welcome:
Roger Cox, President, called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. and welcomed all present.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Roger invited council members to review the minutes of May 9, 2007. Ed Allen move to accept the minutes. Lynda Money seconded the motion and the motion carried.
III. WEBER STATE TRADITIONS:
Margie Esquibel asked council members to share any traditions they remembered while attending Weber. Council members responded with; Song Fest, Boxing Matches (Smokeless Smokers), Homecoming Parade with parade floats, Annual Geology Bus Trips with Dr. Buss, Victory Bell sounding at football games, Idaho State Game Train, Pass the candle, Snow Carnival, Intramurals, Lighting of the W on the mountain, Hike to Mount Ogden, Live Bobcat and Snow Ball were some of the traditions council members mentioned.
Sandi Coxe asked council members if any members performed in the band or knew of anyone who participated in the band during the 1950’s, as she is planning a band reunion.
IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Membership Committee:
Bob De Boer reported that there were excellent candidates for the two vacancies on the council. Ed Allen had nominated Dr. Jeff Booth and reviewed his qualifications and how he would be an asset on the council. Roger Cox had nominated Larry Leatham and commented on his past teaching experiences and his strengths for the council.
Projects and Activities:
Molly Bird reminded everyone of the Alumni Golf Tournament on June 8; she thanked those council members who had volunteered to help with registration that morning. Molly invited council members to return their volunteer hours report to her before leaving the meeting. She also announced that Merle and Dahrl Allen were the 2007 Emeriti Alumni Homecoming Royalty.
Social Committee:
Roger thanked Lois Poole, Carol Freestone and Joan Petty for their diligence in providing refreshments for each council meeting
Lois thanked everyone for their support and attendance at the Spring
Social. Lois also thanked Carol and Joan for willing to rotate refreshment assignments. Lois thanked Pat Larson for her influence and encouragement in making her experience on the council so positive.
Reunion Committee:
Donna Roberts reported the committee met on June 5 and finalized all the details and mailed the invitations for the 1957 Reunion. Donna thanked Margie for her help and organization skills, the committee had a good time planning the reunion. It will be held July 13 and 14 in the Sky Suites and Alumni Center. The council members were invited to attend and will receive a formal invitation in the mail.
University Support:
Ed Allen reported there was over $4,500 in the student emergency fund. He thanked Pat Larson for the latest contribution to that fund. The Fall Class Without A Quiz will be planned during the summer.
V. PRESIDENTS REPORT:
Roger gave an overview of the Council’s activities; stating that a goal of the council was to get acquainted with people and places on campus. Our Council meetings included special guests: Ron McBride, Football Coach; Kim Turner, Assistant Athletic Director; President Ann Millner; Carla “CT” Taylor, Women’s Basketball Coach; Curtis Roberts, Vice Provost for Innovative and Economic Development; Brad Mortensen, Interim Vice President for University Relations and Brenda Kowalewski, Professor of Sociology. We toured the remodeled Swenson Gym with Lisa Pedersen, met in the Rich Lounge of the Dee Events Center and participated in Alumni Training. We participated in WSU Salutes, Women’s Volleyball games, Football tailgate parties, sponsored Class Without A Quiz speakers, Randy Rahe and Chick Hislop, volunteered handing out caps and gowns, attended Men’s Basketball Payoffs, hosted the May Spring Social honoring Randy Rahe and Carla “CT” Taylor, helped students with the Student Emergency fund and volunteered many hours to help the University. Roger thanked the Council for making this a very successful year.
VI. OUTGOING PAST PRESIDENT:
Roger invited Donna Roberts to stand and thanked her for her many years of service to Weber State and the Emeriti Alumni Council. He commented on her dedication to serve, enthusiasm, eagerness to help and be involved, always happy and positive, always willing to do what needed to be done. He expressed his appreciation for her making sure everything she was involved in was a success
and done right. Roger presented Donna with a parting gift.
VII. NEW COUNCIL PRESIDENT:
Roger reported he had enjoyed being the Council President and passed the
imaginary gavel to Liz Brewster, President for the coming year.
Liz stated that she was excited and that she wanted the Council to help increase Alumni Association membership and be stronger that before. Liz announced the Executive Committee for the next year: Ed Allen, Vice President and Curtis Smout, Secretary and asked for approval of the Council. The Council gave unanimous approval for the Executive Committee. Liz announced the new committee chairs; Molly Bird, Social Committee; Carol Freestone, Projects and Activities Committee; Bob De Boer, Membership Committee; Roy Thornock, University Support and Delores Shupe, Reunion Committee.
Liz invited the Executive Committee and Committee Chairs to a luncheon on June 20th, at 4155 Edgehill Drive, the home of Roger Cox..
VII. OTHER:
Margie Esquibel invited Council Members to take the wrapped gift at each place and a WSU Directors Chair before leaving the meeting in appreciation for all their wonderful volunteer efforts..

Bob De Boer moved to adjourn the meeting. Lynda Money seconded the motion. Motion carried.
