Discussion
Report on UHESA
- Cindy Stokes and Drew Weidman attended the UHESA
conference at Dixie College.
- Cindy reported that in institutions where
classified and professional staff committees are combined, they seem to
have much more influence in the campus community.
- Drew recommended to UHESA that, in the future, the
conference should be relocated to a more central location in the state
to cut down on travel costs.
Collaborative Relationship with CSAC
- The committee agreed that it would like to build a
more collaborative relationship with CSAC, particularly in relation to
the issue of changes in Medical Benefits. The group felt that it is
important have a united front on this issue.
- Some members of the committee even suggested
combining CSAC and PSAC into one committee in order to be a stronger
voice in the university community.
- Drew Weidman will make connections with CSAC and
explore opportunities for collaboration.
- Cindy recommended giving ourselves a deadline to
meet with them.
Medical Benefits Advisory Committee (Discussion led
by Drew Weidman)
- There has been a mandate from the Board of Regents
to make a change in the way medical benefits are administered in Utah
higher education institutions.
- Employees will now have to participate in the
premium costs of the benefit/medical package.
- There is a Medical Benefits Advisory Committee and
Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will put together a RFP
(Request for Proposal) to the insurance companies after input has been
given from the Advisory Committee and the campus community. Both
committees are currently comparing medical benefits plans from other
universities in the Utah Higher Ed. System to decide upon the best plan
for WSU employees.
- The role of PSAC members is to be a sounding board
for employees and to provide the employee’s feedback to members of the
Advisory/Steering committees.
- Committee members were given copies of the
different plans in the Utah Higher Ed. System to examine and provide our
feedback to Drew Weidman, who is on the Medical Benefits Advisory
Committee.
- Concerns and suggestions from PSAC…(see next page)
- How this will affect employee’s take-home
salary
- Professional staff are uneducated about their
medical benefits and need information.
- Recommend to the Medical Benefits Committees
to please provide readily accessible information to campus.
- PSAC committee members would like to present a
united front with CSAC on this issue.
- Recommend a centralized area for feedback from
the campus.
Higher Education Academy
- Members were encouraged to attend Higher Education
Academy because it will improve their understanding of Higher Education
and how it works. Drew Weidman and Gloria Perez-Jensen confirmed how
valuable it was for them when the enrolled in the program last spring.
- Woody Slaughter registered
Provost Selection Committee Representation
- There is no representative from PSAC or CSAC on
the Provost selection committee.
- The staff members who are on the selection
committee need to be informed that they represent all staff for the
university.
