P'Sack' Awardee
Cristine Jennings
Tutoring Specialist
Academic Support Centers and Programs
P'Sack' Awardee of the Month
BIOGRAPHY
Cristine
manages 25 student employees through the Math
Tutoring Center, where face-to-face and online math help
is offered. Christine is an excellent
musician and a lifelong student of culture and history.
She said that she enjoys working at WSU and that
"Every day is different and interesting. I get a great deal of
satisfaction from teaching. My co-workers are well-supported, highly
competent and great to be around."
She
graduated from WSU in 1995 in Applied Mathematics and Geosciences.
Cristine earned a Master's degree in Earth &
Planetary Science. She is a member of the
College Reading & Learning Association.
Cristine's
mother is currently employed at WSU as Marketing Director in Performing
Arts and her
grandmother worked as "the voice of Weber State," or switchboard operator,
for 40 years. Her family owns and operates a
non-profit community art center in downtown Ogden. "We
participate in Ogden's "First Friday" Art Stroll. Come see us any first
friday of the month: it is always free. The address is 2556 Washington
Blvd."
NOMINATION
SELECTION
Cristine believes in what she is and always looks for ways
to spread the message. She manages tutors, tutees and the Math Tutoring
Center, team teaches tutor training classes, advertises math and tells
everyone that math anxiety can be overcome and math competency can be
accomplished at WSU.
She is especially effective in working with
non-traditional students who return to school many years after their
previous math classes. She is very effective at relating math concepts to
everyday uses, thereby giving confidence to people who are using math
casually without even realizing it. Once a person realizes this, a lot of
anxiety is abated.
Cristine has greatly increased student use of the Math
Tutoring Center through her comprehensive advertising across campus, in
the Signpost, through the morning bulletins, table tents in the cafeteria,
inserts in various student packets. She promotes the Math Tutoring Center
by attending various department and program events at the first of each
semester. If there is an opportunity to get the word out she has used it.
She also teaches a Physics Lab each semester and
occasional classes in Geosciences.
