John Kowalewski
Media Relations Director
University Communications

P'Sack' Awardee of the Month
BIOGRAPHY
*******************************************************************************
As director of Media Relations, I serve as a liaison
between the media and the university. I write press releases promoting WSU's students, faculty, staff, departments, offices and success stories.
I also advise members of the campus community on how to interact with the
press and offer tips for dealing with the media. Additional duties include
maintaining and updating the WSU Today Web pages and producing videos,
including the commencement video each semester.
I'm an avid NFL fan, and my favorite team is the
Pittsburgh Steelers. (Is there any other team???) I collect football
cards, enjoy listening to music and love to read. I take long walks around
my neighborhood for exercise and I enjoy traveling with my wife and kids.
Most folks on campus know me as "John K." I enjoy working
with a wide cross section of campus and getting
to know the dedicated people who make WSU a great place. I'm grateful for
the tremendous support I receive from my colleagues and supervisors.
I grew up in Rochester, N.Y. and earned a bachelor's
degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Maryland. I came to
WSU in 2001 after spending 12 years working as a journalist. Fresh out of
college I spent six years working for the Washington Bureau of NBC News,
before moving to Ogden in 1995. Upon arriving in Utah, I was hired by the
Standard-Examiner and spent six years working on the copy desk and serving
as the news editor for StandardNET, the paper's online edition.
My wife Brenda and I have been married for 15 years and we
have two wonderful children who make our lives a lot of fun. Brenda
teaches sociology at WSU.
NOMINATION SELECTION
John K. exemplifies all of the traits
and characteristics this award strives to recognize. He works
countless hours to make sure Weber is viewed in the most positive and
professional manner in working with the community and media. He handles
some of the most sensitive campus issues. His work is often
displayed in the newspaper, on the evening news, at the legislature, in
newsletters, and at commencement. Often his work is picked apart to
the 't' making sure it is politically and factually correct. Having
collaborated with him on several projects over the years we can attest to
his professionalism, easygoing personality, and exacting standards.
John bleeds purple! He is a great ambassador for the University.
Weber State University is fortunate to have someone of john's caliber
working for our great university.
